COVID-19 Impacts Everyone in Different Ways

Many employees have not been able to work because of it.

The furlough scheme has helped many organisations and leaders to support individuals who have not been able to work during the coronavirus pandemic. The majority of the education sector have not been able to tap into this resource to help employees, and so other methods of support have had to be deployed to help people to return to work.

What was the HR situation?

  • A clinically extremely vulnerable (CEV) Teacher so severely impacted by the pandemic it caused them very high levels of anxiety which also greatly impacted their confidence and ability to teach.
  • This meant they were not able to concentrate or deliver online lessons from home.

How did the Birch-HR Consultant(s) support?

  • The lead Consultant worked with the Headteacher and the Occupational Health Partner, Bright Health Screening to support the teacher, and they are now being phased back into online learning.
  • The Consultant prepared a script and questions for the scheduled meeting with the employee in advance, and talked through the approach to the meeting with the Headteacher.
  • A supportive discussion was held to better understand the triggers for the anxiety that were personal to the Teacher, and possible ways were discussed to overcome some of the anxieties and how to try and effectively manage them. The Consultant followed up on the agreed actions the same day to ensure the employee got the support they needed.
  • The Teacher didn’t want to bother her doctor and chase them for the vaccine that was overdue. The lead HR Consultant provided the NHS link where the top 4 groups could book online, and the teacher was able to get an appointment for the vaccine very quickly.
  • The employee was very grateful for the support and help, which enabled them to return to work remotely very quickly on a phased return with support from her colleagues and Headteacher

What was the outcome and how did HR add value?

  • The outcome was a very capable teacher and employee returning to work on a structured plan with the appropriate and effective support in place.
  • This mitigated the need for further absence and supply teacher costs.
  • The pupils also had their very much valued teacher back!
  • The Headteacher was able to focus on leading the school.
