Men’s Health Week 10 – 16 June 2024

Jun 10, 2024 | Uncategorised

Men’s Health Week is running from 10-16 June 2024.

This week we are raising awareness of men’s health and to encourage all men to seek help to address health concerns that they may be experiencing.

Statistics

If you look at a few statistics, it’s important that we help to raise awareness:

  • 4 in 5 suicides are by men, with suicide the biggest cause of death for men under 35.
  • 1 in 5 men dies before the age of 65.
  • Men are statistically more likely to engage in harmful behaviours, such as drug taking, drinking, and gambling to cope.
  • Men are less likely to seek help for cancer symptoms.
  • Middle-aged men are twice as likely to have diabetes than women.

What can employers do?

  • Try to create a culture that focuses on well-being, so people can feel they can talk about health in an inclusive environment with no judgements.
  • Give your employees the opportunity to talk about health in a private and confidential setting.
  • Signpost to resources, the GP, or Occupational Health.
  • Observe changes in behaviour and ask if they want to talk and take the time to listen.
