Strike Action in Schools

The National Education Union announced it had passed the legal turnout threshold for national teacher strikes in England. In the event of strike action at a school, the Department for Education expects the Headteacher to take all reasonable steps to keep the school open for as many pupils as possible.

DfE guidance on handling strike action in schools is here: Advice template (publishing.service.gov.uk).

Which Unions and their members appear to be striking?

  • ASCL – currently deciding on whether to hold a ballot.
  • NASUWT – failed to reach the number of votes legally required.
  • NEU – announced 7 days of strike action in England & Wales. Noted, that NEU state that they are continuing to press the case for Support Staff pay, as appears the threshold is not met for support staff to strike.
  • NAHT – considering rerunning the Industrial Action ballot due to postal disruption. Legal requirement not met, short of 50% needed.
