HR Update: STPCD 2026 – Preparing for Your School Pay Policy Review
An important update for our education clients
As we move towards the implementation of the latest School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) changes, schools and Trusts should now be thinking ahead to their annual review of pay arrangements and their Pay Policy.
At Birch-HR, we will shortly be providing our education clients with recommended policy updates and accompanying guidance to support you in reviewing your existing Pay Policy and ensuring it is ready for the new academic year.
What does this mean for schools and Trusts?
The STPCD remains subject to the relevant consultation process, so the final position needs to be confirmed before schools and Trusts formally approve and implement any changes.
In the meantime, there is value in preparing early. We recommend that schools and Trusts:
- Review their current Pay Policy
- Consider where amendments may be required to reflect the new STPCD
- Consider the impact of any proposed changes on pay progression, budgets, and related processes
- Ensure Governors/Trust Boards are aware of the forthcoming review
- Plan sufficient time for consultation, approval, and communication with staff
- Update and ratify the Pay Policy and process pay changes

We know that the annual pay policy review can be a significant task for central HR teams, schools, and Trusts, particularly where there are wider changes to employment practices and expectations. Our aim is to make the process as straightforward as possible and ensure that your school and Trust are well prepared.
Please look out for our recommended updates and guidance.
